Culinary
Have an authentic experience tasting local food cooked in a traditional Maori way in an earth oven - called a Hangi. A way for the community to come together, this method of cooking involves wrapping baskets of food in a damp cloth and burying them with fire-heated rocks in a pit. The earth traps the heat and steam, slow-cooking the food to perfection. Food made with pride.
New Zealand's highest mountain
New Zealand is renowned for its stunning mountainous landscapes and national parks. Aoraki/Mount Cook is one of our favourite national parks in New Zealand. Why? The area has the highest mountain and the longest glacier in New Zealand.
Mount Cook is a staggering 3764 metres, the highest mountain and the Tasman Glacier is no less than 27 kilometres long. The national park also has 23 peaks that are higher than 3,000 metres.
Get inspired
Queenstown is New Zealand's adventure capital, centred around the crystal waters of Lake Wakatipu and nestled between dramatic mountain ranges. Take a day trip to the northern tip by jet boat and visit rural Glenorchy and Dart River.
Thrill-seekers will be busy ticking off their bucket list - skydiving, bungee jumping, skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, luging and rafting, are all possibilities in Queenstown. Bungee jumping was even invented here!
Hiking in New Zealand
New Zealand has 10 official “Great Walks”. These spectacular trails showcase the diverse landscapes of New Zealand. Glistening lakes, golden beaches, snow-capped mountains, native forests, deep gorges, sweeping valleys and flowing rivers. Lake Waikaremoana, Tongariro Northern Circuit, Whanganui Journey, Abel Tasman Coast Track, Heaphy Track, Paparoa Track, Routeburn Track, Kepler Track, Milford Track and Rakiura Track are the official 10 Great Walks. But, you don’t need to stick to these 10 to benefit from picturesque views. Walking trails are abundant with a range of difficulty levels and distances.
Dangerous animals in New Zealand
In New Zealand, you don’t have to be afraid of poisonous animals. Except for one spider called the Katipo spider, there are no dangerous animals. This makes New Zealand an excellent country for camping, glamping and tramping.
Wearing sunscreen in New Zealand
The seasons in New Zealand are the opposite of the United Kingdom. Don’t forget to use high SPF sunscreen, even in the cooler months. The UV rays in New Zealand are much stronger, therefore you can burn quickly if you don’t apply sunscreen throughout the day. We also recommend wearing a hat and sunglasses for protection.
