Entry requirements into Australia and New Zealand

Australia's border is open to international travel.

Australia's border is now open to all international travellers. People travelling to Australia must wear a mask for the duration of their flight and in all Australian airports. As a British passport holder, you will also need to apply for the free eVisitor 651 visa which will be linked to your passport.

Who can enter Australia?

To enter Australia, you must hold a valid passport, a valid visa, and a completed and signed Incoming Passenger Card.

Incoming Passenger Cards are distributed during your flight to Australia by your airline. below.

What is required prior to departure?

Australia has announced that pre-departure Covid tests for international travellers are no longer required, from April 17th, 2022.

The rule whereby international arrivals had to return a negative PCR test 72 hours before boarding a flight was scrapped in January. Now it is no longer necessary to show a medically supervised, negative rapid antigen test (RAT) result within 24 hours of their flight departure time.

Travellers will also still be required to wear a mask while on international flights based on medical advice. These measures will be implemented under the non-emergency provisions in the Biosecurity Act.

Here are some useful resources to help you travel with confidence. And some more information about preparing to travel to Australia.

Apply for a tourist visa

Unless you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, you will need a valid visa to enter the country. As a British passport holder, you will need to apply for the free eVisitor 651 visa which will be linked to your passport. This allows you to enter Australia multiple times over 12 months and stay for a maximum period of 3 months.

You can apply online. Firstly, by creating an ImmiAccount where you can activate your email. Requests are generally approved within four days of application. And the visa starts on the day it is granted. We recommend you print all the email attachments and take them with you to Australia.

You need to have a valid passport before travelling to Australia. You should ensure that it has a validity of more than six months. Children are also required to have a valid passport. To apply for a visa, go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website. Or, you can visit your local Australian Embassy. If you are unsure of anything, we can help you find the answers.

New Zealand's borders are open

The international border is now open to fully vaccinated British travellers. More information can be found here.

What is required prior to departure?

Testing is no longer required to enter New Zealand

To enter New Zealand without controlled isolation and 14-day quarantine, you must be fully vaccinated (two doses). The last vaccination must have been given at least 14 days before departure. There are different options in the vaccination combinations that are recognized and that allow you to bypass the MIQ (isolation and quarantine).

On the official website of the New Zealand government, you will find a detailed listing of the possible combinations of recognized vaccines for entry.

New Zealand traveller declaration

You can start the New Zealand travel declaration 28 days before your flight. You should submit your declaration as soon as you have your pre-departure test result, so there is time to verify and review your documents before your flight.

Vaccination certificate

To prove you are fully vaccinated, you will need a digital vaccination certificate or a paper document from a state health agency or licensing agency confirming full COVID-19 vaccination.

What must the certificate contain?

  • Confirmation that you have received one or more COVID-19 vaccinations (how many doses depends on which vaccine you have received)
  • Your full name
  • Name of the vaccine or sets of vaccines you have received
  • Name of facility that administered the vaccine
  • Name of the place where you received the vaccines
  • Date of each dose or the date the primary series was completed

Travellers who have not been vaccinated must apply for an exemption from the Department of Health before entering New Zealand. It must be proven why you need one. The director-general of the health authority decides whether you can be granted an exemption.

If you cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, you need electronic or written proof from a doctor that clearly substantiates this. You do not need to apply for an exemption.

Travelling with children

No vaccination certificate is required for children aged 16 and under. They can enter New Zealand without quarantine if they are travelling alone or with a parent or legal guardian who meets the vaccination requirements for entry without quarantine.

From the 28th of February 2022, fully-vaccinated New Zealanders and all other eligible travellers living in Australia can return to New Zealand without staying in MIQ. From midnight Wednesday 2nd of March, self-isolation is also no longer required. Travellers are still required to undertake a rapid antigen test (RAT) on the day they arrive in the country and on days five and six. Travellers who return a positive RAT must immediately self-isolate, register their result and follow up with a PCR test.

More information about the regulations surrounding the COVID-19 virus in New Zealand can be found here.

Visas & Visa Waiver Countries

As a British passport holder, you are required to obtain an NZeTA - New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority. This can be applied on the New Zealand Immigration website or via the NZeTA app. Please allow up to 72 hours for processing time. You are required to have a passport that is valid for six months to travel outside of Europe.

The NZeTA is valid for British citizens for up to six months and for up to three months for people from other visa-waiver countries. More information can be found here.
