Boutique hotels offer a more personal way to travel, with fewer rooms, plenty of character and a genuine connection to their surroundings. While larger hotels can be practical in certain city or airport locations, for most self-drive holidays we favour smaller, carefully chosen stays where the accommodation feels like part of the journey, not simply somewhere to sleep.

We usually recommend booking boutique hotels 9-12 months ahead, especially for popular coastal areas, school holiday periods and travel between September and April. Many of the best small-scale places have limited rooms, so leaving it late can mean compromising on location, character or pace.
