Wildlife spotting in New Zealand

New Zealand is a wonderful place to watch wildlife in its natural habitat. From dolphins and seals along the coast to rare birds tucked away in peaceful forests.

From fiords to volcanoes: every region has its own wildlife

Down in the far south, around the Otago Peninsula, you can spot royal albatrosses, sea lions and, with a bit of luck, the rare yellow-eyed penguin.

In Fiordland, look out for dolphins gliding through the fiords or seals lazing on the rocks. Head over to Stewart Island and you may even spot a kiwi in the wild – an experience unique to New Zealand.

Along the northern coastlines, such as the Bay of Islands, dolphins and the occasional orca weave through clear waters. And in the peaceful forests of the North Island, you’ll hear the distinctive call of tūī and other native birds found nowhere else on the planet.
