Taranaki

Taranaki, named after the imposing volcano, is situated in the mid-west of the North Island. The region is known for its high waves and is popular with surfers. Inland, you’ll find rugged landscapes, rivers and national parks with ancient forests, ideal for walks. Taranaki is a peaceful, beautiful destination for those seeking to unwind in nature.

Mount Taranaki (Mount Egmont)

In the heart of Egmont National Park lies the enormous and majestic volcano, Mount Taranaki. The almost perfectly symmetrical volcano is 2,518 metres high. Its last eruption was in 1775.

If you want to climb to the summit of Mount Taranaki, set off from the North Egmont Visitor Centre. This route is recommended for less experienced climbers, as the ice on the north side of the mountain tends to melt earlier. If there is still ice and snow on the mountain, the climb is really only feasible if you are an experienced climber. The hike then takes around six to eight hours.
