When is the best time to visit?
This beautiful part of Victoria can be visited any time of the year. However, early autumn (March) and late spring (November) have calm and comfortable weather with little rain. In early March, vineyards are laden with ripe grapes and you can watch the harvesting process. It is also the perfect time to join the food festivals that occur during this period.
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are two varieties you'll rarely go wrong with in the Yarra Valley, but the cool climate also produces award-winning sparkling wines. And it doesn't end here! Look a little further and you'll find great Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and lesser-known wines such as Nebbiolo and Gamay.
Known as the valley’s premium grape variety, Chardonnay used to be the Yarra's most popular wine. However, it's been surpassed by Pinot Noir in recent years. Having said that, there has been a resurgence in interest in it. New varieties that are lighter and less oaky have started to emerge. Today, the Chardonnays of the Yarra Valley have increased citrus notes and are slightly more floral than their past counterparts.
Moving on from whites to reds, Pinot Noir is perhaps the most popular red wine in the Yarra. The varieties from the region are often perfumed and aromatic, whilst also boasting fruity, savoury, and earthy undertones.
Be sure to visit TarraWarra Estate, one of the best wineries in the Yarra Valley and a must-see destination. It is well-known for its art museum, fine wine, striking architecture, seasonal food and friendly atmosphere.
De Bortoli is an amazing, family-friendly winery which has stunning views overlooking the region's hills and neighbouring vineyards. Indulge in traditional Italian-style food in the upstairs restaurant. Head into the cellar door where you can try some of the winery’s favourites like their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Check out some of the oldest and largest trees in Australia, some reach 73 metres high and date back over 300 years!
Set in the peaceful high country east of Warburton, lies the popular Upper Yarra Reservoir Park. The carefully maintained gardens and picnic grounds, encompassed by eucalypt bushland and spectacular scenery, makes visiting Upper Yarra Reservoir Park a memorable experience. Take a stroll to the viewing platform and watch water flow through the reservoir's outlet basin as it begins its journey to Melbourne.
