Welcome to Phillip Island

Located approximately 140 kilometres southeast of Melbourne, you will find a natural wonderland known as Phillip Island. This laid-back oasis is also Victoria’s first surfing reserve, a place where you can find some of the best breaks in the country.

Home to the smallest penguin in the world

Say G’day to a parade of Fairy penguins on Phillip Island and watch in awe as little penguins surf through the waves after a day of fishing. As they reach the shore, they’ll wait for their mates and together in a large group slowly waddle back to their burrows.

A galore of things to do and see

Admire seals at Seal Rock, home to over 35,000 fur seals, the biggest colony found in Australia. Wander along wooden boardwalks and spot koalas in the eucalyptus trees. Marvel at the Nobbies and wander along with spectacular clifftop boardwalks.

Penguin Parade

Home to the largest little penguin colony in the world, the famous Penguin Parade is a must-visit during your time on Phillip Island. As the sun starts to set over Summerland Beach, watch as fairy penguins ride the waves into shore and make their way back to their burrows together to spend the night. Truly, a spectacle of nature and a once-in-a-lifetime experience that should not be missed during your visit to this part of the world.

Cape Woolamai

The most southernly point of Phillip Island, Cape Woolamai offers amazing panoramic views of the island. Marvel at the ancient pink granite, wild ocean and clifftop views. Home to the largest colony of Short-tailed Shearwaters, this part of Phillip Island is not to be missed.

Hike and absorb the island vibes

Cape Woolamai is home to the famous Pinnacles, south of Cape Woolamai. Conquer the 3.6-kilometre walk that takes approximately 90 minutes. Be sure to visit the Pinnacles Lookout and soak up the spectacular views. The Cape Woolamai Coastal Walk is an 8.5-kilometre walk that takes approximately three hours.

Churchill Island

Connected by a bridge to Phillip Island, Churchill Island will take you to another period of time. Discover the the 50.7-hectare historical grounds that offer a range of farming activities. A unique eco-tourism attraction, that is kid-friendly and is also known as the first site of European settlement in Victoria.

Wildlife

With plenty of opportunities to meet unique Australian wildlife, Phillip Island is an ideal place to visit. Say G'day to koalas at the Koala Conservation Reserve. Have a close encounter with native Australian animals at Maru Koala and Animal Park.

Learn more about the fascinating marine creatures living here at The Nobbies Centre and admire Seal Rock. On your way back to Melbourne, be sure to catch the free Pelican feeding at San Remo, daily at midday.

Cowes

Cowes is an ideal base to explore Phillip Island with the most accommodation options. With a north-facing beach, it is also a great place to enjoy picnics, cool off for a swim or simply relax beachside. Are you a history buff? Stop by the Phillip Island Historical Society Museum and learn more about the island's history.

Cowes to San Remo cycling track

If you are feeling active, take the bike path from Cowes jetty to San Remo. Along the way, you will pass by many attractions such as the National Vietnam Veterans Museum, A Maze'N Things maze and theme park and the Churchill Island historic farmstead. The track is 17 kilometres one way and is a great way to see the island.

Other attractions

Visit Pyramid Rock at sunset and watch the sparkling waters over the Bass Strait. Indulge in some war history at the National Vietnam Vets Museum. If you feel like admiring some Australian contemporary art, visit the Mingara Gallery. Get your heart racing at the Phillip Island Circuit or go for a round of gold at the Phillip Island Golf Club. The annual Phillip Island Grand Prix is also held here and attracts visitors from all over the world.

With a range of full-day tours with a small groups and private tours available, there are many options to visit Phillip Island. Departing from Melbourne, together with a local guide in a comfortable vehicle. Experience all of the highlights and hidden gems along the way.

Would you like to self-drive?

Phillip Island is approximately 140 kilometres from Melbourne and takes just under two hours to reach, without stops. You will need to travel along the Monash Freeway from Melbourne and take the exit to Phillip Island (near Cranbourne) along the South Gippsland Highway. Continue to follow the signs for Phillip Island onto the Bass Highway until you reach the Phillip Island Tourist Road.
