Things to do at the Great Barrier Reef

Snorkelling and diving – a world beneath the surface

The reef is one of the most spectacular places on earth to dive or snorkel. Glide through crystal-clear waters and marvel at the technicolour coral formations teeming with life—turtles, clownfish, reef sharks, rays, and an astonishing variety of tropical fish.

Scenic Flights – see it from the sky

To truly grasp the scale and beauty of the reef, take to the skies on a scenic flight. From high above, you’ll see the swirling patterns of coral cays and turquoise lagoons stretching out to the horizon.

Look out for the famous Heart Reef, a naturally formed coral formation shaped like a heart—perfectly romantic from the air.

Sailing and island hopping

Explore the reef at a leisurely pace aboard a small-scale catamaran or sailing yacht. Hop between tropical islands like Green Island and Fitzroy Island, where you can swim, snorkel, hike or simply relax on white sandy beaches.

Many islands offer overnight stays, giving you the rare chance to wake up to the sounds of the ocean and birdsong. Ask us about our unique stays!

Marine encounters and wildlife watching

Between May and September, the reef becomes a highway for migrating humpback whales. You might also spot dolphins, sea turtles, giant clams, and manta rays gliding gracefully through the water.

Nearby places to explore

Port Douglas – boutique charm meets reef adventure

About 40 miles north of Cairns, Port Douglas is a stylish beach town with a more relaxed pace. From here, you can access both the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, making it an ideal twin-centre destination.

Wander through the local markets, dine at award-winning restaurants, or take a sunset cruise from the marina.

Fitzroy Island – adventure on your doorstep

Just 18 miles from Cairns, Fitzroy Island is a lush, mountainous island fringed by coral reefs. Hike through the rainforest to the summit for sweeping ocean views, visit Nudey Beach (voted one of Australia’s best), or explore the waters by kayak or paddleboard. It’s close to the mainland but feels a world away.

Green Island – coral cay escape

Only 16 miles off the coast of Cairns, Green Island is a small coral cay surrounded by reefs and home to a unique blend of marine and rainforest ecosystems. It’s one of the few islands where you can snorkel straight from the shore and walk through a rainforest on the same day.
