Northland
Northland boasts a sub-tropical climate, diverse landscape ranging from pristine white beaches to rugged coastline and holds immense Maori significance. With a large Maori population, strong tradition, and culture, it's the perfect region to integrate and learn about the indigenous people of New Zealand. It is the home of Tane Mahuta - the Lord of the Forest, a giant Kauri tree located in the Waipoua Forest.
At the very tip of the North Island, where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean collide is Cape Reinga. According to a Maori legend, it is the tail of Maui’s fish and the place where the spirits of the deceased leave their homeland. Take your pick of beaches, there are so many to choose from, including Ninety Mile Beach and Matauri Bay. Spend your days swimming, horse riding, surfing, sandboarding, and fishing.
Bay of Islands
Experience the magic of the Bay of Islands, a natural playground with over 140 sub-tropical islands waiting to be explored. The best way to discover the secluded bays, dramatic coastline, crystal blue waters, and marine wildlife including dolphins, is by boat. Set sail on a yacht charter, visit the impressive hole in the rock, or jump off the boat. Stop off for local fish and chips at Russell.
Maori culture is deeply embedded in the region, and a visit to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is a must. In 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi, between Maori and British, was signed. Here, you will not only enjoy a cultural experience but also spectacular views over the harbour. For mountain biking enthusiasts, the Twin Coast Cycle Trail takes you on a cross-country journey.
